It was just a few years ago that the Florida Marlins World Series win paid out some lucky sap $100,000.   In their short life time the Marlins have won two World Series.  This year, they are off to their best start in franchise history.  The Marlins odds of winning the 2009 World Series?  40/1 for a payout of $4000 on every $100 bet at BetUS.com.  Those odds are likely to change if they haven't already.

Florida has started the season 9-1.  An interesting tidbit to note is that,  Since 1969, 17 other teams started a season 9-1 or 10-0; nine of those teams went on to make the playoffs.

Jeremy Hermida hit an RBI infield single in the 10th inning to give Florida its fifth straight victory on Friday.

"To come back in the ninth, with two outs left and you hit a home run to tie the game, it naturally gives you a spark," Hermida said. "It kind of jump-starts the team, and gives us a little momentum. Even though it's a tie game, we felt we had the momentum right there."

Leo Nunez (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth. Matt Lindstrom worked the 10th for his second save, getting three outs after allowing a leadoff double to Elijah Dukes.

At press time, the Marlins had extended their wins to 10, the best record in the league.  The Los Angeles Dodgers had the next best record at 9-3.

Among the early favorites to win the 2009 World Series, only the Chicago Cubs had a winning record at 7-4.  Both the Yankees and Red Sox had .500 or worse records at press time.
