The Canadian province of Quebec has proposed a ban on Internet gambling through a newly introduced Bill 74.
Quebec’s Kahnawake Reservation is home to a number of licensed online gambling sites. It remains to be seen what, if any, impact such a measure would have on the sovereign nation’s ability to host such sites, including the likes of Bovada and Sports Interaction.
Instead of targeting operators, the bill would essentially prevent residents of Quebec from accessing “illegal” online gambling websites via an ISP blocking requirement.
Local AM 680 says that “Those who oppose this, say it’s just another way for Quebec to block competition – and that it paves a new way for other governments in Canada to decide what its citizens can and can’t do online”.
