Winner of the Holy Bull Stakes and Fountain of Youth, Mohaymen slipped in his most recent race at the Florida Derby, finishing in 4th place.
Mohaymen was among the original favorites to win this year’s Kentucky Derby.
The Florida Derby loss hasn't discouraged Kiaran McLaughlin, Mohaymen's trainer. Others have begun to dismiss him.
"I understand that, as far as handicapping goes," McLaughlin said Tuesday morning at Churchill Downs. "We still have confidence in him. He only had a bad minute, 49 seconds in his whole life."
McLaughlin claims the Florida Derby loss was a fluke, pointing to a very short run to the first turn, a wet track and recent transport to Gulfstream Park the same day as the race.
Rain and transportation will not be a factor in Saturday’s Race for the Roses.
"We feel like he will rebound and run his 'A' race," McLaughlin said to a handful of reporters. "It was a funny day. The track was funny, and the trip was funny.
"I get it. Had we won that day, people would be lined up at our barn instead of Doug O'Neill's barn."
