Many of the European bookmakers ceased taking bets on who will star as the next James Bond after noticing an unusual number of bets begin to pour in on one particular British actor.

“Thor” and “Avengers” 36-year-old star Todd Hiddleston was seeing a suspicious burst of bets pour in over the last 24 hours, prompting a number of Europe’s top bookmakers to pull the plug on the James Bond wager.

Not all followed however as Ladbrokes was still offering Hiddleston at 2-1 odds.

Luther star Idris Elba and Damian Lewis had been tipped as front-runners for the coveted job, but now the odds suggest the pair have missed the cut, according to the Daily Star.

Next James Bond star betting became hot after it was revealed that current Bond actor Daniel Craig expressed disenchantment with the role, saying that he would “rather break this glass and slash my wrists” than reprise it during an interview that took place last year.  Still, it was believed Craig might stick around for another two Bond films.

The betting markets appear to indicate otherwise.

"There is no smoke without fire, and following the big gamble on Tom Hiddleston in the last 24 hours, we've had no choice but to pull the plug on the market," said Coral's Nicola McGeady.

He added: "Earlier in the year there was a gamble on Idris Elba and Damian Lewis, but nothing has come close to the recent gamble on Hiddleston.”

Suspicious betting patterns often provide a signal that something is amiss.  Such was the case back in January when Pinnacle Sports stopped taking wagers on the Australian Open citing an unusual spike in bets for Lukasz Kubot and Andrea Hlavackova to beat David Marrero and Lara Arruabarrena.  David Marrero and Lara Arruabarrena, were not playing to their maximum as they went down 6-0, 6-3.
