Belmont Stakes
We finally get to the third race (or jewel) of the Triple Crown. This race happens three weeks after the Preakness and with 1 1⁄2 miles of track it is the horse breaker and champion maker.
At this point one of two scenarios happening: a Triple Contender or not.
We will look at the scenario in which there is no contender as it is easier and faster to explain.
On this first scenario, all you see in the media, is an upcoming race, important yes, but no hype around it. This makes this race easier to bet on, since you can see it as a regular race.
Now the second scenario is a little tricky, especially since you can get involved in the hype and momentum of a possible Triple Crown winner.
Once the Derby winner wins the Preakness all hell literally breaks loose.
Pundits, Prognosticators and Experts start talking about horses chances, odds, stats, regarding his chances to win the Triple Crown. This is good information to have, BUT you must keep a cool head as a bookie and start analyzing the contenders in the upcoming three weeks towards Belmont Stakes.
Usually all the media attention is now focused on this horse, his trainer, jockey, owner and some key information might come up but your head needs to be more in the other horses, and the chances for them to beat the favorite.
Remember only 12 horses have achieved the Crown and the last one, American Pharoah, took 37 years to happen.
The Belmont, being another big purse, will attract Derby horses that did not run the Preakness (5 week rest) and other horses who as of this point have not participated (fully rested) into the equation. All these running against a favorite that will have only 3 weeks to rest before this challenge. Talk about odds. But still there are 12 that have made it.
