The Gerry Weber Open is also known as the Halle Open, and it began in 1993 as a World Series event on the ATP Tour. They moved to the International Series, the World Tour 250 Series and then the World Tour 500 Series, which is its current classification. The event is held on grass outdoors as players get ready for Wimbledon at the end of June.
2016 Confirmed Contestants
Switzerland's Roger Federer is scheduled to defend his title, but he had to withdraw from the French Open due to injury, so keep an eye on that. The top seed in his absence would be Japan's Kei Nishikori, followed by Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, Spain's David Ferrer and Belgium's David Goffin. France's Gael Monfils is also slated to be in Germany, along with Dominic Thiem of Austria and Viktor Troicki of Serbia.
Champion
Federer won his fourth title of 2015 with a straight-sets win over Italy's Andreas Seppi, and he is the king of this tournament. Federer has now won eight editions of this event; next is Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia with three.
Raven Klaasen of South Africa and Rajeev Ram of the United States won their lone title of 2015 as a team, defeating India's Rohan Bopanna and Romania's Florin Mergea in straight sets. Still, no team has won this event more than once. Russia's Mikhail Youzhny is the only player to win more than once as he did it twice with different partners.
