AUSTIN, Texas (Associated Press) — The Texas Attorney General’s Office is trying to shut a gaming hall recently reopened on the 10,000-acre Alabama-Coushatta Reservation in East Texas.

Attorney General Ken Paxton says in a federal court filing the Naskila Entertainment Center violates an existing court injunction, should be closed and the tribe fined $10,000 a day until it’s shut.

Tribal spokesman Carlos Bullock tells the San Antonio Express-News the tribe believes it’s on firm legal ground and received authority from the federal government and the National Indian Gaming Commission to open the hall about 75 miles northeast of Houston. Since May it’s been attracting big crowds to its 365 electronic bingo machines.

State officials say the Alabama-Coushatta agreed three decades ago to no gambling as a condition of becoming a federally recognized tribe.
