2016 World Series Wagering Record Anticipated Thanks to Cubs, Indians Long Wait
- Longest active dry period should contribute to above average viewership and betting with the Cubs last World Series win in 1908
- Sportsbooks on the Vegas Strip expect this World Series to break previous record holder for most bets, the 2004 World Series where Boston ended its 86-year championship drought
- This one is even capturing the attention of non-Baseball fans according to sportsbook director
- Cubs a -112 favorite for Game 1
It’s fair to say that the 2016 World Series will likely be one of the most watched, and to that end, the most wagered on.
The Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians own Major League Baseball’s longest active dry spells with the Cubs winning their last World Series in 1908 and the Indians in 1948. Cleveland has not appeared in a World Series game since 1945.
According to Reuters, a number of sportsbooks on the Las Vegas Strip expect wagers to exceed the unofficial record set in 2004 when the Boston Red Sox snapped their 86-year championship drought.
"Because both of these teams haven't been there in such a long time it's capturing non-baseball fans' attention as well," Jay Kornegay, vice president race and sport operations Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook, told Reuters on Monday.
BetOnline opened Game 1 at -105 for both sides Monday. The line has since gone to -112 for Chicago and +105 for Cleveland.
The Cubs were a slight 5-6 favorite to win it all.
