New Jersey Lawmakers Want to Punish Carl Icahn for Trump Taj Mahal Closure

The New Jersey state Assembly was to vote Monday on a bill that would impose a five-year license suspension for anyone shutting down a casino after January 2016. The state Senate had already given its final approval in October.

Any such measure would only apply to activist investor and former Trump Taj Mahal owner Carl Icahn, who shut down the property this summer. Four other casinos had shut down prior to January 2016.

If the bill passes, New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie would have to sign it.

Icahn closed the casino on Oct. 10 after a casino workers strike, began on July 1 and a settlement could not be reached.

The activist investor, often referred to as a corporate raider, is a close personal friend of US President-Elect Donald Trump.
