Phil Mickelson Once Forked Over Close to $3 Million for Gambling Debts

In the trial of professional sports bettor Billy Walters, it was revealed Thursday that golfer Phil Mickelson once dropped nearly $2 million for gambling debts to Walters.

That $2 million represented five percent of Mickelson’s salary when the payment was reportedly made in 2012.

Walters is accused of illegally trading on stock tips he received from the former chairperson of dairy processing company Dean Foods.  Mickelson was named as part of the investigation but never charged with any wrongdoing.

“Mr. Mickelson owed similar debt to Mr. Walters in the past,” prosecutor Brooke Cucinella told the jury.
