Matthew Gooch, 82, has been released from prison nearly 40 years after shooting and killing a man during a home poker game. The amount in dispute? A measly $4.
Gooch was found guilty in the 1980 slaying of Franklin Woods, Jr. in Modesto, California.
Gooch was said to have become irate over the $4 loss, left the game, then later returned packing a loaded shotgun. One shot to the neck killed Woods instantly.
Though Gooch would admit to the crime, he later claimed self-defense.
A previous parole hearing had been turned down after Gooch stated he might kill again if someone stole from him.
The California Governor’s Office is reviewing the parole board’s decision.
