Patch is this year’s feel good story, a half blind horse. He finished a strong second in his only graded race, the Louisiana Derby.
Patch, like Battle of Midway, never raced at the age of two and the last horse in this situation to win the Kentucky Derby did so prior to 1900.
His three career races are the fewest in this field, and only Big Brown (2008) and Regret (1915) have won the Derby since 1900 with that few previous starts.
