Adelson Loses Bid to Sue Democrats Who Linked to ‘Hooker’ Article

Casino billionaire and GOP mega donor Sheldon Adelson lost a bid to sue Jewish Democrats who hyperlinked to an article alleging he allowed prostitutes to work in his Macau casino.

The Nevada Supreme Court shot down the suit, ruling that the hyperlink functioned as a footnote.

From the Cleveland Jewish News wire:

The hyperlink, in a National Jewish Democratic Council online petition during the 2012 presidential election, was to an Associated Press article covering a lawsuit by a former employee of Adelson who alleged that he was terminated for, among other reasons, refusing to allow prostitutes to ply their trade at the casino.

“The fair report privilege immunizes the petition drafters from civil liability,” the court said.

Adelson owns the Las Vegas Review Journal.  The LVRJ points out that the court’s decision will be used by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York to determine whether Adelson’s action can proceed.

That media outlet also states that Adelson has long refuted the prostitution claims.

From the LVRJ:

A filing on behalf of Adelson noted that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Commission in August 2012 retracted similar allegations about prostitution at the Sands Macau casino, finding that they were untrue and saying it was wrong to have repeated them.
