The state of New Jersey wants sports betting legalized. The major sports leagues, including the National Football League, has fought to prevent this. And now the case has gone all the way to the US Supreme Court.
The hearings began Monday (December 4) with a final decision expected by some time next summer.
LegalSportsReport.com is reporting that several of the justices took avenues actively questioning the constitutionality of the federal ban, including Chief Justice John Roberts.
The case the justices are hearing Monday is a result of New Jersey’s yearslong effort to bring betting on sports to its casinos and racetracks. New Jersey is challenging a federal law that bars states from authorizing sports gambling. If the Supreme Court strikes down the law, giving sports betting the go-ahead, 32 states would likely offer it within five years, according to one report.
The leagues have argued that legalized sports betting would hurt the integrity of their games. Proponents of legalized sports wagering often point to the United Kingdom where several football teams are actually sponsored by gambling sites.
