At the time this story went to press Midnight leading into Monday morning Eastern Standard Time, Jeff Lisandro sat atop the leader board of the 2009 World Series of Poker. This is an amazing feat regardless of where he ultimately ends up. Lisandro is heading the race to be named "World Series of Poker Player of the Year".
"He could become the most recognized names in all of poker when all is said and done," proclaimed Gambling911.com Senior Editor, Payton O'Brien. "Should Lisandro win, he would be like the Michael Phelps of poker."
That's because the winner of the 2009 WSOP main event will be guaranteed a few million dollars. Coming into the main event, Lisandro had already accumulated nearly $800,000 since late May when the World Series of Poker events got underway. More importantly, he won three WSOP bracelets.
Lisandro's live tournament winnings already exceeded $3 million coming into the 2009 World Series of Poker.
"I don't think I got my just due as a poker player over the last five years," said Lisandro, the Australian-born resident of Salerno, Italy. "I haven't benefited from the business dealings associated with poker. I came into this series of tournaments and said 'You know what? I don't understand all these young players with sponsorships and me with none.'
"The toughest money in the world to win is money at the poker table. These are the best players in the world I compete with, and sponsorship money can make it easier. I've never had any success with endorsements. Maybe these bracelets will change that."
