Molly's Game Opens Big But With Limited Theatrical Release

The box office numbers are in for the opening weekend of the highly anticipated poker flick Molly’s Game, and they are good.

Around $1 million was generated from a limited theatrical release (271 screens in North America).  This amounted to approximately $3,838 per location average.

Molly’s Game marks Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut and the film has already been nominated for two Golden Globe awards including Best Actress, Jessica Chastain.

Molly’s Game chronicles the life of Molly Bloom, who hosted high stakes poker games that featured the likes of big name Hollywood stars including the likes of Tobey Maguire and Alex Rodriguez, as well as Wall Street financiers and Russian mobsters.  The games were eventually busted by the FBI.

The film will be shown in over 1500 domestic locations beginning January 5.
