Florida Lawmaker Wants Slot Machines In District
A legislator from Florida is working hard to see slot machines in his district. He is doing this in spite of fierce opposition from House members. The Supreme Court is also against the wish. In spite of all these, the lawmaker wants a slot machine.
Ramon Alexander is not settling for less. The legislator is the idea that people can decide. To him, the issue of a small number of people cannot resolve. The lawmaker is introducing a bill before the House. He feels that the people have a voice. They can decide for themselves. They know what is right for them.
Alexander is bringing a gambling bill to the house amid challenges. But if it receives approval, his Gadsden County will benefit. He is a firm believer in the people making decisions. Besides, Alexander says that a majority of people in Gadsden want slots. The more 46, 000 people living in the county is a good population.
In his proposal, Alexander points out to the financial challenges. Finance is one among many problems facing his county. He argues that if slots are put, the county will get money. In turn, this money can go to various development projects. In part, the proposal says that the positioning is right. The lawmaker agrees that the Gadsden County is in a remote part. But he also says that it is an excellent place to put slot machines.
“Gadsden County has a unique position in North Florida. Above all, This is a good thing to take advantage of Slot machine gaming and development can be put. There can be many in and around the interstate within the City of Gretna. Or they can be near the parimutuel quarter horse facility,” the bill states.
It is not going to be easy for the bill. When introducing the bill, Alexander knows there’re many opposing. Already, the Supreme Court is out with a ruling. Republican members do not want it.
On more than one occasion in the past, GOP members say no. These members are not new to Alexander. Since then they keep saying how unresponsive they feel about the bill. GOP members say they are not going to discuss gambling expansion. They say if anything, it is not in the Sunshine State. It is clear in the mind of Alexander that without the GOP support, the bill will fail. The law is further hit by the court ruling. In May 2017, during the Gretna appeal, the court says no to more devices. In making such a decision, the court set an example.
The court ruling is available in 20 pages. In summarizing the decision, the document says no more devices. The court agrees that the city has a referendum. But it makes a ruling. “The city had a ruling in 2012. This doesn’t mean the city can make a law that goes beyond the state,” says the document. The lawmaker is trying all means to make the bill sail through. But with the kind of opposition ahead of him, chances are slim. It will be a pleasure if he sees even one slot machine in Gadsden County.
