Three Billboards Oscar Odds at Even

Three Billboards was coming in at EVEN odds to win the 2018 Oscar for Best Picture while the Shape of Water is still technically the favorite at -140 in this hotly contested battle.

While there are those who believe Three Billboards has come along at just the right time, considering the subject matter (it's about a woman out to avenge her daughter's rape and seemingly corresponds with the #MeToo movement), another camp suggests the film is too divisive.

ABC News asks the question: Can backlash tank a film's Oscars prospects?

The concerns are not so much with the film's overriding theme but rather with its racist character.

Ira Madison III writing for The Daily Beast said it was "tone-deaf" and "wholly offensive."

"It attracts the type of crowd that likes to reward simplistic tales of racism like 'Crash,' where white people learn how to be good to one another at the expense of black people," Madison wrote.
