Status of Sports Betting in These States

Lawmakers are mulling over the potential for legalized sports betting in both Kentucky and Tennessee.

Rep. Jason Nemes of Louisville promised to draft a bill after the Supreme Court ruling but any introduction won’t be until January.

“Hopefully Kentucky is smart enough to seize the day and get it done,” he said.

State Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Brian Kelsey, R-Germantown would like to pass a law allowing sports betting, though he acknowledged the road to doing so will be long.

"I plan to introduce legislation to allow sports betting in TN with the tax proceeds to go to K-12 education. It appears this will not require a constitutional amendment, but the legislative attorneys are still researching it," Kelsey tweeted immediately after the Supreme Court decision.

Tennessee law states gambling is "contrary to the public policy of this state,” though there are some gambling activities permitted.  These include the state lottery and fantasy sports.

Residents of both states will, for now, have to rely on internationally-licensed sports betting websites.
