Efforts Under Way to Bring Sports Gambling to KY

WAVE reported Sunday that a bipartisan group of lawmakers were working on legislation that would bring sports betting to the state of Kentucky following a May ruling by the US Supreme Court abolishing previous decades long prohibition.

The state would have to amend its current laws.

At the present time only internationally-licensed online sports betting sites can be accessed from Kentucky in addition to bets on races placed at Churchill Downs and via their website TwinSpires.

Bipartisan Efforts to Legalize Sports Gambling

Democratic State Senator Morgan McGarvey, of Louisville, is part of a bi-partisan group that includes Republicans Julie Raque Adams and Jason Nemes.

"Most people predict nearly half the states are going to do it here in the near future," McGarvey said.

"We're trying to put together a responsible framework so we can have sports betting here in Kentucky, we can benefit from it."

Former Jefferson County Republican Party Chairman Bill Stone agrees: "This is bipartisan. It makes absolute sense and it could be a great source of funds for my favorite, higher education."

Kentucky residents will still need to rely on the international sports betting sites this NFL and College Football season as well as Super Bowl 53.

McGarvey told Reynolds he believes sports betting will pass the legislature shortly after they go back in session, and that won't be until some time next year.
