They should remain a legitimate threat in 2018. 19 of last season's starters return. On top of everything else, the defense was among the top ten units in College Football last year. The division they are playing in will be among the most competitive however.
The Current Climate of Sports Betting
The US Supreme Court abolished all previous sports betting prohibitions back in May, thus paving the way for individual states to amend their own laws. Some will (and alread have) welcome legalized sports gambling. Others will not (i.e. Utah).
Michigan did have eight bills that would expand gambling in the state, including several that would legalize sports betting and wagers on fantasy sports.
Four have gotten votes in committee — three that would allow Internet gambling and another that would legalize fantasy sports betting — but none have gotten votes in either the full House of Representatives or the Senate.
For those bookies focused on college students, there is a catch 22. Even if the state opts to allow legalized sports betting, wagers can only be placed by those 21 years or older. Most college students are 18 to 21 years of age. This of course provides bookies in the region with a terrific advantage.
Many of these bookies, however, will be college students themselves. Student bookies run the risk of being thrown out of school in violation of university protocol and or bylaws.
Likewise, physically taking bets from others in the state could result in steep fines. Likewise, we want our college age young adults to be safe when involved in bookmaking practices.
