One of the New York Giants top defensive players, Osi Umenyiora, has been MIA for several hours after leaving the team's headquarters without telling coaches.

Umenyiora, the only Pro Bowler currently with the Giants who played in the 2007 Super Bowl, had attended meetings on Monday morning, but left before practice.

He returned later in the afternoon and met with coach Tom Coughlin.

"I made a mistake by leaving the facility today. I was wrong. I came in here this afternoon and met with coach (Tom) Coughlin, coach Sheridan and (defensive line) coach (Mike) Waufle and apologized and explained why I left the building; that will remain between us. I have no problem with our defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan or any of our coaches. That's the end of it, as far as I am concerned."

Coughlin had this to say earlier:

"There must have been something of a personal nature, and he left. I haven't personally talked to him. He did respond to (GM) Jerry (Reese), evidently by text. That's all I have. I haven't seen him, so I can't tell you."

Umenyiora missed all of last season with a leg injury.

The Giants can ill afford to have any type of personnel disputes playing in such a tough division.

They remained tied as the +175 favorite to win the 2009 NFC East with Philadelphia

They were now big favorites to win UNDER 10 regular season games in 2009 however.
