The Rams moved back to the top of the heap and own the NFL’s best record at 11-1. They also clinched their second straight NFC West title by taking down the Lions.
Kansas City got a scare from the hapless Raiders and that was concerning to oddsmakers, who increased the Chiefs odds of winning their first Super Bowl since the merger. Four teams saw their Super Bowl stock rise thanks to big wins over the weekend. The Chargers moved ahead of the Steelers on the odds board thanks to their win in Pittsburgh on Sunday night. Houston hasn’t lost since September and now has the longest winning streak at nine in row. Dallas got people’s attention with its win over the Saints and the Ravens have won three straight behind Lamar Jackson. The Raiders and Niners were officially eliminated from playoff contention last week with more to follow.

We don’t know who will win the Super Bowl, but we now know who won’t. Football in the Bay Area has been bad for the past several years and fitting the two clubs in that region of the country were the first to be eliminated from making the postseason. Making it official was just a formality since we all knew it was coming for the Raiders when Khalil Mack was traded before the season even started.
Niners fans held out hope until Jimmy Garoppolo shredded his knee and the injuries continued to pile up. Winning games with C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens at quarterback was going to be hard enough, making the playoffs and winning SBLIII was impossible.
Now, let’s get back to teams that have a realistic chance of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in early February. The Rams returned to the top of the list and they got a much-needed boost from their defense to take down the Lions last weekend. In their three previous games the Rams surrendered an average of 42.3 points per game. They were able to win two of those matchups, but that’s a dangerous slope. The return of Aqib Talib help limit Matthew Stafford to 248 passing yards and Rams allowed the fewest points in the last five games in the 30-16 win.
The Saints lost a game when scoring only 10 points. No the world isn’t coming to an end. The other team is also trying to win and it happens. The Saints will be fine and the loss may actually have been a good thing. Carrying the weight of a lengthy winning streak gets to be a burden and the odds grow against your continued success. So, the Saints may have relinquished the top spot in the NFC and on our odds board, but they remain a serious favorite.
It’s taken about a month but the Texans are starting to get some respect. Winning nine games in a row is quite an accomplishment and Houston has climbed the odds board to sit at +1500. The Bolts won a key game in Pittsburgh on Sunday night to improve their odds and the Cowboys and Ravens saw significant improvement in their odds.
Stick a fork in the Packers after they lost to the Cardinals on Sunday as a two-touchdown favorite. The loss not only cost the Pack a chance at reaching the postseason, it was also the last game of Mike McCarthy’s Green Bay coaching career. The Skins are at .500 and just a game off the lead in the NFC East, but it seems much worse after backup QB Colt McCoy broke his leg, joining Alex Smith in the infirmary. It’s hard to imagine Mark Sanchez taking this team to the playoffs.
