The Spurs haven’t missed the postseason since the Clinton Administration and this group doesn’t want to be a part of breaking that streak. The annual rodeo road trip was a disaster with the Spurs winning just one of eight while playing unsettling defense, but they created some breathing room at the bottom of the West playoff standings by winning five in a row. They’ll try for six when they visit the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday.

Odds Analysis

There have been some good and some bad for the Spurs this season, but not a lot of either. That’s why they are wallowing around the bottom of playoff the standings. They were in danger of losing a spot altogether, but the Lakers and Kings couldn’t do anything. Given a reprieve, the Spurs decided to take matters into their own hands, matching their season-high win streak at five by taking down the East-leading Bucks on Sunday. Four of the wins came at home after the Spurs suffered through a 1-7 road trip.

Trading away four starters for a player recovering from ACL surgery was a clear indication that the Mavericks were looking ahead to next season. Now the one remaining starter could miss some time with a sore knee. Losers of five straight and 10 of their last 11 games, there is no need for the Mavs to rush Luka Doncic. The rookie of the year frontrunner has struggled recently anyway, so it would probably be worth it to give him some time off while taking a peak at potential roster adds for next season.

Spurs

It turns out a return home was all the Spurs needed to change course. The team looked lost and confused on their rodeo trip that covered nearly a month, eight games and seven losses. And there was a lot of shaky defense, unlike what were accustomed to seeing from the Spurs. They allowed more than 100 points in every game and at least 120 points in six of them. Playing their first game ATT Center in a little less than four weeks, the Spurs held Detroit to 93 points.

They haven’t been as stingy as they were in the Detroit game, but the Spurs have been much better than they were on the road trip. Facing high quality offensive teams like OKC, Denver and Milwaukee, the Spurs allowed an average of just 103.2 points over the last five outings and won them all. And the veterans are leading the way. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 29 points with 15 rebounds and DeMar DeRozan had 28 points helping the Spurs overcome an early 15-point deficit to match their longest winning streak of the season.

Mavericks

The only reason to even watch the Mavs was to see what Doncic would do next. Now that he’s out of the lineup, there isn’t much to get excited about. Dallas dropped its fifth straight on Sunday, but more important is the health and well being of Doncic. After the loss to Houston, Doncic said he felt a “pop,” though he stayed on the floor to the final horn. A last-second game-winner is Doncic’s specialty, but he deferred to Jalen Brunson, who had his attempt blocked.

A little down time might be good for Doncic, who has struggled recently. Over his last four games he was 31 of 78 from the field and 9 of 29 from three-point land. And his struggles have trickled down to the rest of the team. During the losing streak the Mavs failed to break the 93-point mark three times while scoring less than 90 points twice. Don’t expect the offense to suddenly find traction without Doncic and against a team that’s locked down lately.

With Doncic on the shelf the Mavs can turn to Dirk Nowitzki for offense. No, wait a minute. Ten years ago, maybe, but not now. It will be interesting to see what Rick Carlisle does with his lineup since most of the players weren’t even around at the beginning of the year. The Porzingis trade depleted the club of what little top-end talent it had and they got nothing in return, at least for the short-term. That left a gaping hole that hasn’t been filled. Guys like Jalen Brunson will be given an opportunity fit in and impress the coaching staff, but there isn’t enough of them to sustain any winning streaks.

NBA Score Prediction: San Antonio 106, Dallas 98
