Central Florida- The Knights finished the season strong, with wins at Houston and against Cincinnati, both ranked teams. They are fresh off a 20-plus-win season for the second time in the past three. The Knights boast one of the longest and most defense-oriented teams in the nation. Where they lack is with ability to convert free throw shooting despite being among the top 25 teams to make it to the line.
VCU - ESPN.com: "The loss to Rhode Island in the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals came at a moment when VCU was seen as heading for a No. 8 seed. Instead, Mike Rhoades' team may well be wearing the visiting uniforms in the round of 64. The Rams wrapped up their profile at 25-7, a record built in no small part on a 12-game win streak that extended from January to March. VCU's marquee win was long thought to be the road victory at Texas, but, with the Longhorns finishing the season at 16-6, that game has lost some of its previous luster. Still, the Rams went 2-2 in Quad 1, and a NET ranking in the 30s will continue to serve this team well in the committee room.
Predictions
Sporting News: Taking into account both teams' lack of offensive firepower and VCU's elite defense, this game should be a real slobber-knocker with the potential of the Rams and Knights keeping the score tight and in the 50s or 60s. Given VCU's ability to apply pressure and its more consistent performance over the entirety of the season, the Rams should narrowly prevail.
Athlon Sports:
"Can UCF finally find its way into the NCAA Tournament win column, or will the Rams channel their previous Big Dance success and advance to square off with mighty Duke? The Knights have rewritten all sorts of program records, but their imminent matchup with the stingy defense of VCU poses a serious challenge to the storybook season being written in Orlando."
They have Virginia Commonwealth winning by a rather large margin of 11 with the line Central Florida -1.
Action vs. Line Movement
This one has just been hovering around the 1 with either side favored.
Is the Line Correct?
Sagarin indicates a line that should be Central Florida -1.5.
