In almost a blink of an eye, the original 68-team field for this year’s NCAA Tournament in men’s college basketball has been reduced to the final 16 teams battling for a national title.

There were a few surprises along the way, but the top two seeds in each region makes up half of this year’s Sweet 16. The Pac-12’s Oregon Ducks are the only double-digit seed to advance and the AAC’s Houston Cougars and the WCC’s Gonzaga Bulldogs are the only remaining teams from a Mid-Major Conference.

The ACC has advanced five teams to the Sweet 16 with the No. 4 Florida State Seminoles (West Region) and the No. 4 Virginia Tech Hokies (East Region) joining the Duke Blue Devils (East), Virginia Cavaliers (South) and North Carolina Tar Heels (Midwest) as No. 1 seeds.

The SEC tends to dominate college football, but this has also been a dominant basketball conference for this year’s NCAA Tournament with the No. 2 Kentucky Wildcats and the No. 5 Auburn Tigers on a possible collision course in the Midwest while the No. 2 Tennessee Volunteers take aim at winning the South Region and the No. 3 LSU Tigers continue play in the East.

The Big Ten has made its presence felt with the Michigan State Spartans (East) and the Michigan Wolverines (West) as a pair of No. 2 seeds joining the No. 3 seed Purdue Boilermakers (South) in advancing to the next round.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders are the lone team left from the Big 12 as the No. 3 seed in the West and No. 12 Oregon in the South is the lone survivor from the Pac-12.

This is about as chalky as it gets this time of year. After reshuffling the deck for the NCAAB futures odds to win this tournament, Duke still top the list as +330 favorites, but the gap has closed with the competition. Virginia has looked solid in its first two games and it is now second on the list at +400 odds. Gonzaga would be a close third at +450.

North Carolina still has a tough road to hoe in the Midwest Region as a +700 fourth-favorites before the betting odds start to really drop off. Kentucky is next at +1200 followed by Michigan State at +1400. The trio of teams at +1600 betting odds to win a national title is made up of Michigan, Purdue and Tennessee.

Headlining the teams with the longer odds to win is Texas Tech at +2000. Auburn and Houston are next at +2500 and Florida State’s odds to win are set at +3300. Rounding out the 16-team list are Virginia Tech (+4000) and LSU (+5000).

Digging deeper into these futures odds, the Duke Blue Devils appear to still have the path of least resistance to the Final Four as -175 favorites to win the East Region. They have been opened as seven-point favorites against Virginia Tech for Friday’s Sweet 16 matchup. From there, Duke would have to face the winner of Friday’s LSU vs. Michigan State matchup with the Spartans set as six-point favorites.

Virginia’s road to the Final Four as a -140 favorite to win the South starts with Thursday’s game against Oregon as an eight-point favorite. The other matchup in that region has Tennessee favored by one point against Purdue earlier Thursday night.

Out West, Gonzaga is a 7.5-point favorite against Florida State on Thursday and it is a -125 favorite to advance to the Final Four. In the other half of that region semifinal, Texas Tech will face Michigan on Thursday with the Wolverines favored by two points.

North Carolina’s odds to win the Midwest Region are set +140 followed by Kentucky (+250), Auburn (+400) and Houston (+400). The Tar Heels are 4.5 point favorites for Friday’s matchup against Auburn and Kentucky is a 2.5-point favorite for Friday’s game against Houston.

Sixers? Knicks? Who Can Challenge Boston in the East this Season?

As the new NBA season gets underway, there is most certainly a sense that the Boston Celtics are the team to beat once again. The 18-time champions really took an “if it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it” policy in the offseason, and it’s hard to argue with the tactic.
