2019 PGA Tournament Bets Could Prove Record Shattering

A combination of Tiger Woods resurgence and big name fantasy sports companies heavy promotion of golf events will likely translate into this year's PGA Championship being among the most wagered on events in 2019.

Over the years, Golf Majors events have been deemed "important" in the world of wagering. 

"Tiger Woods victory in Sunday's Masters could push upcoming Majors closer towards a sort of mini Super Bowl status when it comes to sports wagering," suggests Payton O'Brien of Gambling911.com.

The 43-year-old Woods shot a 2-under 70 for one-stroke victory Sunday.  This was his first majors win since the 2008 U.S. Open.

For the books, his victory presented a Catch 22.

On one hand, Woods victory will result in a significant amount more wagers being placed on Majors tournaments featuring Tiger Woods.  But his victory came at a cost.  Some sportsbooks, like William Hill in Nevada, confirmed they lost millions.

FanDuel and Draftkings have heavily promoted golf contests in recent years.  With both Fantasy Sports firms entering the sports betting arena this past year, many of their Fantasy Golf customers are now being converted into sports gamblers.  Both companies advertise heavily during Masters events.

"It's a perfect storm,' O'Brien acknowledged. 

Woods opened as the 9-1 favorite to win the upcoming PGA Championship.  That's a payout of $90 for every $10 bet.

Dave Mason of BetOnline revealed Monday morning that twice as many futures bets were coming in on Woods as the next biggest bet count.

Books look to profit with upcoming tournaments including the PGA Championship with the knowledge that Woods won't win them all but the gamblers will keep backing him.

Only once has Woods won the first two majors in a season: 2002.
