PA Mobile Sports Betting Starts Early May

Online and mobile sports betting in Pennsylvania will kick off the beginning of May, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control board spokesman said Wednesday.

The news comes one day after PA reported record numbers bet at the state's land-based sportsbooks. Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh led with almost $12 million in bets.

Most of the state’s casinos have been taking sports bets since last fall, but testing has resulted in delays coming online.

“I really believe that within the next two to three weeks, we will see the first of the sports wagering internet sites go up for testing,” PGCB spokesman Doug Harbach said.

Online betting now accounts for 80% of all sports wagers placed in neighboring New Jersey.

It was a year ago this coming month that the U.S. Supreme Court opened the floodgates by abolishing decades of prohibition against sports betting in the States.  As a result each state can now offer the activity by amending their current laws.  In some cases, like in New Mexico, tribes began opening sportsbooks without any state amendment.
