Sports Betting News: Holzhauer Destigmatizing Sports Betting, NH Bill Closer to Passing

Jeopardy Champ Holzhauer Destigmatizing Sports Betting

For decades, the faces of the American sports bettor were caricatures: a chain-smoker with a curled-up racing form, a bookie sitting in a dimly lit room, a shrieking tout wearing a gold chain and making dubious claims.

That's how the Washington Post's Adam Kilgore starts his piece this week profiling Jeopardy's second biggest money winner in that show's long history, professional sports bettor James Holzhauer.  Based on his daily win average, the 34-year-old from Las Vegas should hit the $2 million mark.

Holzhauer has cemented himself as "America's most famous gambler", Kilgore writes.

He adds: "Holzhauer, a Las Vegas resident, makes his living betting on sports. His emergence, bracketed around the first anniversary of the Supreme Court decision allowing widespread sports gambling outside Nevada, has given a face to the American professional sports bettor. That face happens to be clean-shaven and accompanied by tasteful button-down shirts and a math degree from the University of Illinois." Read More Here

NH Sports Betting Bill Among Most Aggressive, Expected to Pass

New Hampshire could be the latest state to legalize sports betting as early as June.

If it passes, New Hampshire could become the first state to offer sports gambling in bars.  This could present an excellent opportunity for sports bar chain Buffalo Wild Wings, which has hinted it wants to get in on the action

Montana recently approved sports wagering for licensed retail outlets, potentially including taverns, but on a more limited scale.  Bets will be placed on kiosks with the Lottery overseeing the process.

States have been scrambling to amend their own laws after the US Supreme Court abolished decades of prohibition.

“I do anticipate that the House will concur with the Senate changes,” bill author Rep. Timothy Lang said. “I think either way it will pass. If it goes to a committee of conference, I expect they will work it out. But I honestly believe we will concur on the House floor and be done.”

From LegalSportsReport:

The Senate is expected to approve the Finance recommendation May 30.

Senate approval will send the bill back to the House, where the originating chamber can concur with the changes or put the legislation to a conference committee to work out the differences between the bills.

“We did an executive session because we wanted to get all those bills out,” said Sen. Lou D’Allesandro, who chairs Finance. “It’s moving along swimmingly. The Senate is going to pass it. It’s in the budget for like $10 million.”
