Tottenham appears to be a team of destiny heading into its first Champions League final. The Spurs were on the verge of elimination several times, but somehow managed to pick themselves off the pitch and complete the improbable run.
The Spurs floundered early during play in the group stages, picking up just one point in their first three matches. They posted a pair of victories to set themselves up for advancement and a draw with Barcelona in the final group encounter gave them a points tie and an away goals break over Inter Milan.
A Harry Kane goal in the second leg of the round of 16 gave the Spurs a 4-0 aggregate allowing them to move to the quarterfinals, and that’s when the fun started. Pitted against Manchester City, the Spurs got a 1-0 win in the opener and some good luck in the second leg. Falling to Man City, 4-3, the Spurs advanced on away goals. A stoppage time goal from City was overturned by video review.
Kane missed the return to Man City and both matches against Ajax in the semifinals, but Tottenham received key goals from Lucas Moura, Son Heung-Min and Fernando Llorente. Moura’s last minute winner in the second leg of the semis gave Tottenham a 3-2 and an even aggregate. Again, the Spurs advanced on away goals.
Kane has declared himself ready to play in the final, giving Tottenham another force up front. The Spurs will need some offense against a Liverpool club that has scored 22 times in the Champions League, putting them third in the overall rankings.
The Reds had an equally stunning triumph in the semifinal round to advance to their second straight final. In one of the greatest comebacks in Champions League history, Liverpool got two goals each from Divock Origi and substitute Georginio Wijnaldum to erase a three-goal first leg deficit to earn a 4-3 aggregate victory.
Liverpool advanced without two of their top strikers as both Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino sat out. Both are expected to play on Saturday, though midfielder Naby Keita has been ruled out. The Reds netted four without two threats, and with them on the pitch alongside Sadio Mane, goals should be scored.

Liverpool is favored by plenty and rightfully so. The Reds missed out on the Premier League title by a point to Man City, but they have their sights on a Champions League title. They beat Tottenham twice by the same 2-1 score during Premier League action and had a plus-67 goal differential while winning seven more matches than Tottenham. Overall Liverpool won 30 of 38 matches with its only loss to City, which cost them the PL title as they placed second by a single point.
Both clubs will have important players back on the pitch for the final. The Spurs will benefit having star striker Kane, who’s injured ankle forced him out of the last three Champions League matches. Having Firmino back will add another threat for Liverpool to go alongside 26-goal scorers Salah and Mane. And if experience means anything, Liverpool certainly has the advantage in that area, having been in this position last season.
Champions League Final Prediction: Liverpool 3, Tottenham Hotspurs 2
