Belmont Stakes- Triple Crown Final Race Betting Preview 2019
On Saturday afternoon, the third leg of the triple crown will take place in New York with the running of the Belmont Stakes. The field is relatively small with only 9 horses in the race and only 2 horses have odds less than 10-1.
Tacitus comes in as the favorite at 11-8 odds. He did not race in the Preakness Stakes after finishing in 3rd place in the Kentucky Derby where he was one of the top contenders to win prior to the race. He won his 3 previous races before the Derby and had a 4th place finish in his debut. Jose Ortiz will be aboard Tacitus and his trainer won the Belmont back in 2010. Tacitus appears to be the most talented horse in the race.
W of W is Back
War of Will is the 2nd favorite at 2-1 and appears to be one of the only other horses that has a chance to compete based on the odds. War of Will started off 2019 with a bang, winning his first 2 races of the year. He had trouble in the Louisiana Derby where he had a disappointing 9th place finish. He was expected to contend in the Kentucky Derby but finished in 7th place after appearing to be interfered with by Maximum Security who was disqualified. He gave it another go in the Preakness Stakes and appeared to put it all together as he won the race easily. Tyler Gaffalione will ride War of Will once again and will look to make another impressive performance like at the Preakness.
The next 2 horses, Master Fencer and Everfast, come in at 10-1. Master Fencer has raced in just 1 race in his career and it was this years Kentucky Derby where he finished 6th place. The Japanese horse raced up the rail late to earn his solid finish at the Derby as a 58-1 longshot. Everfast, on the other hand, has raced 10 times in his career. He has won just 1 race in his career with that being his 1st ever race back in August of 2018. He has had many disappointing finishes in his career but has gained a little confidence after a 2nd place finish in the Preakness. Everfast will be ridden by Luis Saez who was the jockey of Maximum Security in the Derby. Both of these horses could contend as Master Fencer had a promising debut and Everfast ran one of the best races in his career his last time out.
Intrepid Heart comes in at 14-1. He has raced in 2 races in his career, a 1st place finish and a 3rd place finish in 2 small races and will face a huge step up in class here. I don’t see him as a horse who can contend as he just has not faced the kind of competition he will face at the Belmont.
Three horses come in at 16-1, 2 of which ran in the Kentucky Derby. Tax, whose jockey has not been announced yet, finished in 14th place at the Derby and was never really in the race. Prior to the Derby, he recorded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes in smaller races. He faced a step up in competition in the Derby and it definitely showed. Spinoff had an even tougher time in the Derby, finishing in 18th place. He also faced a step up in competition and was completely outclassed and did not look like he belonged in the field but will give it a shot at the Belmont. Sir Winston is the other horse at 16-1. He has not raced in any big races in his career. He has a win and 2 second place finishes out of his 9 career races, but the competition has been weak. He was a middle of the pack horse against weak horses and I don’t think he can contend here. All 3 of these horses will have trouble staying with Tacitus and War of Will who are just on another level.
Joevia is the last horse in the race and is 33-1. He has raced in 5 races in his career, with just 1 race being a ‘graded’ race which is a small step up in competition. He has 2 wins and 2 second place finishes but those all came in the ‘ungraded’ races. He finished in 11th place in the other race which was the one with the stiffest competition. He will not contend here.
In the End
This is just a 2-horse race. Tacitus and War of Will are going to battle this one out. While Tacitus is the favorite, he could be a little rusty as he has not raced since the Derby. War of Will gained a lot of confidence after destroying the Preakness field and I think he is the one to beat. He was going to make a late run in the Derby but got interfered with. Ultimately, War of Will is going to be the winner and I think that Everfast is a horse that has a chance to contend other than these 2 favorites as he appears to have found his stride in his last race.
