The New York State Gaming Commission has approved sports betting in four of its upstate casinos Monday afternoon.  A bill to allow mobile wagering on sports remains stalled as it has yet to gain majority support within the legislative body.  Governor Andrew Cuomo says he opposes remote sports betting, insisting it would require voters to approve a statewide referendum.

Sen. Joseph Addabbo Jr. (D-Queens), sponsor of the legislation, says that routing mobile betting through computer network servers at existing casinos would likely not require such a referendum.

Under the approved measure, those 21 or older can place bets in-person at any of the state's four casinos located in Schenectady, Monticello, Nichols and Tyre.  Officials expect bets to be taken on sporting events prior to the upcoming Football season.

Those living in New York City will still need to rely on the nearby Meadowlands Sportsbook, just a few miles outside of Manhattan, but in New Jersey.  Individuals can also place bets via their mobile devices once in the Garden State.

One of the companies, Rivers Casino and Resort Schenectady, said it will begin offering sports betting as soon as it gets a license.
