Odds Analysis
With so many great golfers gathered for this event it’s difficult to select a favorite. McIlroy has been solid all season and he responded to his first missed cut of the season at the Memorial by running away with the Canadian Open by seven swings for his 16th PGA Tour title. He has two titles along with seven other top-10s in his 12 stroke play events this season. It’s no wonder he’s atop the odds board.
Close behind is Koepka, who has dominated major tournaments recently. He won the PGA Championship last month, his fourth title in the last nine majors.
There are a few drawbacks for the pair, though. Only one player, Willie Anderson in the early 1900s, has ever won three straight U.S. Open titles. So Koepka getting the three-peat is indeed going to be difficult. McIlroy has been on top of his game this year, but he’s 0 for 2 at Pebble Beach, missing the cut at the 2010 U.S. Open and the 2018 Pro-Am.

And there’s always that guy Tiger the field has to worry about. Woods had a masterful performance at the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach taking a six-shot lead into the weekend and lapping the field by a record 15 swings. It was the most dominant victory in any major championship.
Of course that was nearly 20 years ago and Tiger isn’t the same player. He showed signs that he still has something in the tank by winning The Masters and his tune up in advance of the U.S. Open was a top-10 at the Memorial, so you can’t count the Big Cat out of any major.
Pebble Beach will host for the sixth time overall and first since 2010, but the track is familiar to a number of players who compete in the Pro-Am every year. The layout will look a bit different than it did in February with the distance stretched out to over 7,000 yards. The fairways have been narrowed and the rough is thick. And players have the smallest landing spots on Tour. It’s still a small track by Tour standards, which has a way of leveling the playing field. Accuracy and approach will be key elements to come out victorious.

Put the names of 25 of the best golfers on a wall, close your eyes, and throw a dart. Wherever it sticks probably wouldn’t be a bad pick in this loaded field. It’s all going to come down to ball-striking, staying clear of the many obstacles and hazards that guard the course, and a little bit of luck.
The course will look different than it did in February for the Pro-Am, but we saw Phil Mickelson dissect Pebble Beach to 19-under for the win. He loves playing on the West Coast and he said before his victory that he enjoys playing Pebble Beach and, “The poa annua greens are what I grew up on, so it’s a grass I feel comfortable. Not just putting on, but chipping on, chipping into and hitting full shots.”
Lefty backed that up with a victory and also has a chance to get the career Grand Slam with a win. He’s been all over the place lately, but a return to his comfort zone and a chance to add a Slam to his resume has to ignite the fire. And at +4550, Lefty is a bargain.
It’s hard to ignore Koepka and McIlroy the way they’ve been playing, and Dustin Johnson is No. 2 in the OWGR, so he can’t be overlooked either. I don’t see a darkhorse winning this event just because there is too much talent at the top. DJ gave up a three-shot lead after 54 holes in 2010 and that’s something that still bothers him. He’s performed well in the Pro-Am and I think he gets redemption this time around.
U.S. Open Pick: Dustin Johnson
Top-10 Lock: Rory McIlroy
