Those black clouds just keep following the New York Mets. The Mets were rained out in their Subway Series opener on Monday and they will resume Thursday’s suspended game with the St. Louis Cardinals in advance of the regularly scheduled matchup on Friday.

The Mets couldn’t hold a two-run ninth inning lead and both clubs will be scrambling to finish off the series opener. The pitching staffs could be affected if more innings are played, but the managers can’t worry about that right now.

How Friday’s opener plays out will depend heavily on what happens during the completion of the suspended game, especially with the pitching staffs. The Cards have already dipped into the minors tabbing Daniel Ponce de Leon to start Friday’s regularly scheduled game for the injured Adam Wainwright. The Cards conclude their 10-game road trip in the Big Apple and look to get back in the NL Central picture. Getting swept in Chicago last weekend set them back, but they had a chance to even things up on the trip. However, a 9-0 loss to the Marlins on Wednesday prevented that from happening. The Cards’ 13 road wins are more than only Miami in the NL.
A recent stretch of five wins in their last seven games has the Mets thinking they are in the NL East race. Solid pitching has led to the resurgence and the top of the rotation is what has fans in New York optimistic. But they can’t blow late leads like the one they gave up on Thursday. We’re looking at two good teams, not great teams, in this series. The Cards have an even ledger while the Mets are one game under .500 entering Friday.

Probable Pitchers
Recalled from Triple-A last week, Daniel Ponce de Leon ( 0-0, 1.80 ERA ) will take the hill for the injured Wainwright. A top prospect in the Cards system, Ponce de Leon is making his second spot start. He was recalled in April and held the Brewers to one run over 5.0 innings with seven strikeouts taking a ND in the Cards’ 4-3 win. Ponce de Leon made seven relief appearances last season allowing four runs in 13.2 innings.
A strong season at Memphis made bringing up Ponce de Leon an easy move. He’s made 11 Triple-A starts compiling a 4-4 record and 3.90 ERA across 55.1 frames. He’ll be facing the Mets for the first time in his sixth big league start.
Steven Matz ( 5-4, 3.88 ERA ) had the outing from hell back in April when he failed to record an out, allowed four hits, a walk, hit a batter and was charged with six earned runs. The Mets lost 14-3. Since then, however, Matz has been as steady as they come. In his past eight starts he’s gone 4-3 with a 3.50 ERA. With a 1.37 WHIP and .267 OBA, Matz allows base runners. He’s been able to limit the damage, giving up more than three earned runs just three times in his 12 starts.
Over 83 career starts Matz has decent numbers with a 3.97 ERA and 25 victories. However, the Cards have had his number. He’s 0-3 in three starts against them giving up 16 hits, four homers and 11 earned runs in 11.2 innings pitched. Matz is also coming off a game where threw a career-high tying 120 pitches.
Players to Watch
We mentioned the struggles Matz has had against the Cards and several players have hit him well. One of those guys is new to the St. Louis lineup this season. Considered one of the top power hitters in the game, Paul Goldschmidt has two hits off Matz in his career. You got it, they both left the yard. Paul DeJong is hitting .800 ( 4 of 5 ) off Matz and Marcell Ozuna has a .333 career batting average against the Mets lefty. Keep an eye on these guys Friday night.

This is a unique situation for both managers since we don’t often have suspended games. The carry over, depending on the length, could make for some roster and pitching adjustments for the late game. Assuming everything goes according to plan, the Mets likely won’t have closer Edwin Diaz available after he surrendered the lead in the ninth of the opener. And given the success the Cards have had against Matz, they will make this their game on Friday night.
