Two Obstacles Stand in the Way of NY Mobile Sports Betting Measure Ahead of Wednesday Deadline

A bill that would permit mobile sports betting in New York easily passed in the Senate Monday, but two major obstacles stand in the way of the measure moving any further.

The bill sailed through the Senate with a 57-5 vote in favor.

And while the Assembly could have 76 Democratic supporters, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie must call it for a vote.  He’s been a vocal opponent of previous gambling expansion efforts in the state, including online poker.

Should Heastie actually decide to bring it to a vote and the bill passes in the Assembly, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has already said he believes a voter referendum is needed to permit mobile gambling.

All of this must come to fruition by Wednesday's end of the year legislative session.

Sports betting is a done deal in the Empire State, but only at four desigated casinos.

Del Lago Resort & Casino in Waterloo is 45 minutes away from both Syracuse and Rochester.  That casino will likely draw good business from the Syracuse area during College Basketball season as the Orange is one of the highest profile schools in that sport.

Resorts World Catskills is approximately an hour outside the population centers of Newburgh, Poughkeepsie and West Point.

Tioga Downs is a half hour outside of Binghamton.

Rivers Casino is in Schenectady, a half hour distance from Albany.

None of these casinos are close to New York's top two sports cities, New York City and Buffalo.

The mobile sports betting bill's sponsor, Sen. Joseph Addabbo Jr., already seemed resigned to the idea that he will need to wait at least another year.

“After the session ends, we’ll regroup and see what direction to go in because jobs will be in jeopardy,” Addabbo told LegalSportsReport. “If we don’t infuse activity into the game situation here in the state, horse racing is hurting, OTBs are hurting – there are a number of places that will benefit from sports betting and, if we don’t do it, some jobs will be in jeopardy. I’d rather not see it.”
