MLS Will Allow Betting Sponsorships
9:44 pm ET - The MLS has relaxed its commercial rules to allow betting companies to brand team shirts opening up jersey fronts and sleeve patches from the 2020 season.
The move is a reaction to the sponsorship opportunity created when the US changed betting rules allowing online gambling companies to operate legally in the country. States are now starting to issue gaming licenses.
The MLS also opened up the sponsorship positions to companies in the alcoholic spirits business. Betting and spirits sponsorship will only be allowed on adult team shirts and not on U-21 team kits. Source: Inside Football
California Assemblyman Introduces Sports Betting Bill
3:05 pm ET - A measure to legalize sports in the Golden State has been introduced by California Assemblyman Adam Gray.
ACA 16 would seek to get legalized sports betting on a voter referendum for November 2020.
"The goal is to get something on the 2020 November ballot," Gray told ESPN on Thursday.
Details of the bill are limited.
"I know there's significant interest throughout the California sports economy," Gray said.
The bill must pass by September 13 when this year's legislative period comes to a close.
NJ Tops Nevad in Bets First Time Ever
3:00 pm ET - For the first time -- and just one year after a landmark ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court -- more money was bet at New Jersey sportsbooks than at Nevada books in a month.
In May, New Jersey books took $318.9 million in bets, just ahead of Nevada books, which accepted $317.4 million in wagers during the month, according to revenue numbers released Thursday by state gaming control. Source: ESPN
It's Official: Sports Betting Legalized in Illinois as Governor Signs Off
12:08 pm ET - Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Friday signed off on a bill that expands gambling throughout the state including more than 30,000 video gaming terminals in nearly 6,800 establishments. The bill also allows for a casino somewhere in Chicago and the implementation of sports wagering, including at sports stadiums and ball parks like Wrigley Field.
The Chicago casino would be allowed to have up to 4,000 gambling positions — three times more than any of the state’s 10 existing casinos, most of which will see their maximum number of positions jump from 1,200 to 2,000.
The money from the proposed Chicago casino would be split in thirds among the city, state and the private owner, with the city’s cut earmarked for police and fire pensions.
“We’re responsibly expanding gaming at the request of cities that want to make sure that they have the resources to pay for police and firefighter pensions, and to fund vital services,” Pritzker said.
The legislation opens the door to video gambling machines at larger truck stops, and to slot machines at O’Hare and Midway airports.
China Using Artificial Intelligence to Identify Biggest Potential Losers
11:58 am ET - Some of the world’s biggest casino operators in Macau, the Chinese territory that’s the epicenter of global gaming, are using hidden cameras, facial recognition technology, digitally enabled poker chips and baccarat tables to track which of their millions of customers are likely to lose the most money.
Bloombert reports that the new technology uses algorithms that process the way customers behave at the betting table to determine their appetite for risk. With a high risk appetite identified through these algorithms, the casino has the potential to make sometimes up to 10 times more.
“Those who can afford to lose, those who play even more when losing money, we can for sure offer them a free meal,” said Andrew Lo, executive director of Macau junket operator Suncity Group Holdings Ltd. Suncity will use technology developed by Las Vegas-based Walker Digital Table Systems — which can invisibly track chips, wagers and game outcomes — at the casino it is building in Hoi An, Vietnam.
