MLB Betting Picks July 17 – Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees

The New York Yankees have a comfortable lead in the AL East, but those pesky Tampa Bay Rays have a way of getting under their skin. After dropping three straight one-run games to their division rival, the Yankees pounded their way to a win on Tuesday, building a six-game lead.

Odds Analysis

The Rays were poised to shrink the gap in the division looking for their fourth straight win over the big, bad Yanks. However, New York’s power surge put an end to that, evening the series at 1-1 with an 8-3 win on Tuesday night. Tampa owns MLB’s best ERA at 3.39, but against the Yanks in the Bronx, the staff has allowed an average of nearly 6.4 runs per game. That has resulted in just a 2-6 record at Yankee Stadium.

A bullpen meltdown on Monday made things a little tighter in the division. All-Star Aroldis Chapman served up three runs and the Rays posted their third straight one-run victory over the Yanks. No need for the Bombers to worry, though. Didi Gregorious is settling in following his return from injury and a slam on Tuesday helped New York end its slide and improve to 10-5 against its closest AL East competitor. German missed a month due to injury, yet his 11 wins are second in the AL and he beat the Rays in his only start against them this season.

Probable Pitchers

It took Yonny Chirinos ( 8-4, 3.11 ERA ) more than a month to pick up his eighth win finally getting it Friday in a romp over the O’s. The righty fanned a career-high eight scattering four hits and two runs over 7.0 innings. Chirinos has made nine straight starts since joining the rotation on a permanent basis and he’s 3-3 with a 3.04 ERA in those outings.

Chirinos is familiar with the Yankees lineup after facing them four times already this season, the last two as a starter. Overall, he’s 1-1 with a 3.32 ERA over 21 innings against the Bombers this season, holding them to a .228 average.

A stay on the injured list has been a boon for Domingo German ( 11-2, 3.40 ERA ), who has flourished in two starts since rejoining the rotation. He tossed 6.0 scoreless innings to beat the Jays last time out and has yielded just one run and eight hits with 13 punchouts and no walks in 12 innings since his return.

German was shaky but he did enough to beat Tampa on May 10, giving up three runs on five in 5.0 frames. He surrendered a pair of homers in that contest and allowed 11 in a seven-start stretch that ended against Toronto. German is 2-0 in four lifetime appearances against the Rays, but he does have a 6.75 ERA in those games.

Key Stat

The Bombers have certainly lived up to their name this season with 157 dingers on the year after going deep four times on Tuesday. The big blows came in the eighth on a slam from Gregorius and a two-run blast from Aaron Judge as the Yanks erased a 3-2 deficit. Edwin Encarnacion and D.J. LeMahieu also left the yard, giving New York 29 bombs in 15 games against the Rays this season.

Bet Rays at Yankees at BookMaker.eu

The Yankees have handled Tampa rather easily this season winning 10 of the 15 meetings while going 6-2 in their yard. And that’s a big reason why they have a six-game bulge in the standings. The Rays are hanging around thanks to the best staff in baseball, but that hasn’t been the case when facing New York. For whatever reason, the Yanks have solved the puzzle and have taken advantage of the long ball. Gregorius and Judge are making an impact after returning from injury and I don’t think the Rays are going to score seven in the first like they did last time Chirinos took the mound. That will make for more stressful innings and the Yanks thrive on that.

MLB Score Prediction: Yankees 6, Rays 4
