Sports Betting in Your State
The US Supreme Court has legalized sports betting across the nation. Arizona is yet to amend its own laws and lawmakers in the state seem to have little appetite to do so. There are also the tribal influences that could present a conflict.
Indeed the tribes emerged as major influencers when legalizing sports was discussed this spring.
In many states, tribes are fighting sports betting or taking a go-slow approach because they worry it could force them to reopen decades-old agreements that give them exclusive rights to operate casinos and offer certain forms of gambling.
"The tribes have a major-league seat at the table," said Bill Pascrell III, a lobbyist for gambling interests seeking legalized sports betting across the country.
In Minnesota, for example, lawmakers pushed through a bill but it stalled as a result of the tribes opposition.
The tribes, which operate 21 casinos and have given millions in campaign donations, are especially concerned about allowing sports betting on mobile devices, which they fear could invite wider internet gambling that could threaten their casinos.
As a result, we see offshore sportsbooks as the only means of betting sports online in Arizona for at least through 2021. And even if a bill somehow does come to pass, remote mobile wagering is highly unlikely.
