MLB Betting Picks August 2 – Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees
Just when it looked like the Boston Red Sox were poised to make a run in the AL East, they fell flat on their keister. With a bunch of games against their division rivals, the defending champs were presented a glorious opportunity. And things looked good last weekend after taking the first three of a four-game set against the first-place New York Yankees. They failed to complete the sweep and then got swept themselves by Tampa Bay, leaving a wild card berth as the only thing to play for entering the dog days of summer.

Odds Analysis
Alex Cora sounds like a broken record. After the Sox were swept by the Rays for their fourth straight defeat, “we have to be better” was his go-to line. He’s said that countless times this season. Boston looked good taking the first three games from the Yankees at Fenway last weekend, but they weren’t able to sustain any of the momentum gained from that run. There hasn’t been a problem with the offense. The Sox have the highest team batting average and top MLB with nearly six runs per game. They’ve cashed the over in seven straight games entering this series and 11 times in the past 13.
The Yankees avoided the sweep last weekend and split a two-game interleague set with Arizona. They are just 4-6 in their last 10 games and their lead over Tampa is down to seven games. New York enters this series rested after having a day off Monday and another on Thursday. That allows Aaron Boone to set his rotation for the busy weekend. Despite losing three times to the Sox last week, the Yanks have had the better of the series winning seven of 11 meetings with a 4-1 mark at Yankee Stadium.
Probable Pitchers
With four games in three days it’s going to be a scramble for both teams to come up with adequate pitching. The Sox haven’t set their weekend rotation at the time of this writing, but Chris Sale ( 5-10, 4.26 ERA ) is in line to take the hill. And he’s probably anxious to get out there after he yielded two homers, five hits and six runs in a 9-6 loss to the Yanks last Sunday.
It was a demoralizing start for the Sox and Sale, who entered that matchup having allowed just two earned runs with 22 strikeouts over 12 innings of his previous two outings. He’s lost all three starts against the Yanks this season giving up 14 earned runs and four homers over 16.1 innings.
New York didn’t make a move for pitching at the deadline and will lean on the guys they have. The most impressive arm in the rotation is attached to Domingo German ( 13-2, 4.08 ERA ), who has the second-most wins in the AL. He outdueled Sale last Sunday to salvage the finale striking out nine over 5.1 innings winning his fourth straight decision.
The Yankees have won German’s last five starts and they are 15-3 overall in games he’s pitched, which is pretty impressive for a guy with an ERA north of four. German has allowed 10 hits and six earned runs over 9.0 innings of his two starts against the Sox.
Key Stat
Offense has taken center stage in this matchup over the last seven meetings. The teams have played over the closing total every time with the winning team scoring at least eight runs and reaching double figures on four occasions. The Sox totaled 44 runs in last weekend’s four-game series and they are averaging over 10 runs per game in the last seven meetings. They are just 4-3 in that span, however.
Bet Red Sox at Yankees at BookMaker.eu
It’s hard to imagine the offensive fireworks continuing, and things have been much calmer in the Bronx. With a total that’s likely to be over 10 this one has the under written all over it. New York has a chance to send the Sox further down the standings and their success against their biggest rival can’t be overlooked.
MLB Score Prediction: Yankees 6, Red Sox 4
