Purdum posted the statement on his Twitter account.
The confirmation comes nearly a year after Creighton was kidnapped. Nearly a dozen individuals allegedly tied to the scheme were later arrested by Costa Rican authorities.
Though Creighton had resided in Costa Rica, he was an American citizen raised in Bridgeport, West Virginia and owned a home in that state up until just a few years ago. His late father was a supermarket magnate.
Creighton had run 5Dimes since the late 1990's after arriving in Costa Rica.
Costa Rican authorities confirmed the remains to be Creighton's earlier in the day Monday.
A DNA test has been requested.
