College Football – Week 9 Wise Guy Picks 2019
Our wise guy picks didn’t do so well last week, which is added incentive to have a profitable Week 9. We followed three games that looked to have some sharp action on the early line and only one of them came out a winner. Still, if you’ve been following the wise guy plays in this weekly article you’d have a nice stash of cash in your offshore sportsbook account. Wise guys don’t get them all right. If they did there’d be no house to place a bet.

Wise guys rolled snakeyes in the Marshall-Florida Atlantic tilt backing the under on a game that produced 67 points. Even at the highest number the teams played over the total. We can blame that loss on Lane Kiffin. Purdue showed a lot of heart in their matchup with Iowa and the public was rewarded. Unfortunately, wise guys took another beating on that one when the Boilers covered the 17.5-point spread. The week wasn’t a total waste, however, because the Jayhawks rewarded the wise guy’s confidence with a cover win and near upset of Texas. That’s twice now that Kansas has paid off the sharp action.
The Week 9 college football schedule offers up some great betting opportunities and we’ll take a look at a few games where sharp money has impacted the line. College Football Week 9 Wise Guy Picks
Mississippi State at Texas AM ( 51 ), Saturday, Oct. 26, 12 p.m. ET
Mississippi State just held the explosive LSU Tigers to a season-low 36 points while the Bulldogs offense has struggled with injuries and inconsistent play. The Aggies haven’t been a juggernaut scoring the football either, so when the total hit the board at 49 the public was all over the under. Not under the over, but over the under. In other words, over 60 percent of the money was backing the teams playing below the total. So, the total went up with the help of wise guys backing the over.
It’s not a stretch to think these teams can produce that many points. They just haven’t done it against elite defenses. The key to cashing a winning ticket is in the Bulldogs backfield. Garret Shrader has taken over as the starting quarterback giving MSU an added dimension and Kylin Hill is ready to bust out after three subpar games. And while MSU held LSU to 36 points, the Tigers did score on every first half possession, so there’s that to think about.
Notre Dame at Michigan ( 50.5 ), Saturday, Oct. 26, 7:30 p.m. ET
This game lost some of its pizzazz with Michigan’s loss to Penn State last week, but it’s still a heavyweight battle that’s worth watching. And wise guys are watching the total. A majority of the early action was on the under when the total surfaced at 48. Michigan has one of the better defenses in the country and allowed a total of three points in its last two home games, and the teams combined for just 42 points in last season’s opener. So of course the total spiked to 50.5 thanks to wise guys banking on an offensive outburst.
Last year’s game didn’t have Ian Book quarterbacking the Irish. You might recall they were still Brandon Wimbush’s team at that point. Once Book took over, Notre Dame became more explosive and efficient. And they’ve balanced the attack with a run game led by Tony Jones Jr., who had a career day against USC. No team amassed more yards against Penn State this season than Michigan’s 417, and the Wolverines were a dropped pass away from having a different outcome. Book and Shea Patterson could both have big days at the big house.
Maryland at Minnesota ( -17 ), Saturday, Oct. 26, 3:30 p.m. ET
I’m not sure what more P.J. Fleck and the Minnesota Golden Gophers have to do to earn the public’s respect. They are one of three unbeaten teams in the Big Ten and one of 10 still standing in the FBS, and when they opened as a 15.5-point favorite over Maryland, the public jumped on the Terps. In a normal setting that action would drive the line down, but it looks like the Gophers have impressed wise guys enough to get support against a Maryland team that has just one victory in its last five outings.
After winning their first four games by total of 20 points, the Gophers have just improved whacking their last three victims by an average of over four touchdowns while going 4-0 ATS in their last four. That early season outburst by the Terps has long been forgotten and they are likely just a bump in the road for the red-hot Gophers.
