DALLAS STARS 4 OVER 10 UNDER 0 PUSH

The Dallas Stars haven’t exactly come out of the gate blazing in the 2019-2020 NHL season but they’re hanging around.  With a record of 5-8-1 for 11 points the stars are in fifth place in the Central Division and just four points off of the wild card pace.  Their biggest problem has been their performance on the road where they’re a woeful 2-5-0 on the season.  Things are starting to look up after a four game home stand and the Stars have now won 4 of their last 5 games. Dallas was one of the top defensive teams last year and their defense is starting to come around this year as well.  They’re up to #10 on the goals allowed per game table giving up 2.71 goals per contest.  That’s not bad but it’s not good enough when you’re scoring only 2.21 goals per game—dead last in the NHL.  Sometimes teams will struggle to score and it’ll be a function of variance.  If a team is putting shots on the net at some point they’ll start to go in.  Unfortunately for Dallas, they’re not getting much in the way of shot output either.  They get 28.4 shots per game which is #27 in the NHL.  The good news is that they’ve done an excellent job limiting opponents shots—they rank #3 in the league in this statistical category allowing just 28.4 shots against per game.

As you’d probably expect for a team that isn’t getting shots and/or scoring goals things aren’t going great on the Stars’ power play either.  Dallas has hit on just 10% of their man advantage opportunities which ranks #26 in the league.  The penalty kill is ‘middle of the pack’ but not bad at 80% good for #17 on the league table.  The Stars could remain a good ‘Under’ team for awhile—they’re not scoring goals which means they’ve got to emphasize the defensive side of the game that much more.  They play 5 of their next 7 games on the road so they’re entering a very crucial scheduling stretch.

CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS 3 OVER 7 UNDER 1 PUSH

Times are tough for the Chicago Blackhawks and they’re in a three way tie for the worst record in the Western Conference.  They’re just 1 head of the New Jersey Devils for the worst record in the league.  The most shocking aspect of the Blackhawks’ tough start to the 2019-2020 season has been their difficulty scoring goals.  No one is scoring—not even players like Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane.  The Hawks signed Alex DeBrincat to a contract extension hoping that he’d be an offensive catalyst but he’s been just as bad as everyone else.  Here’s how bad things are for the Blackhawks—Toews, Kane, DeBrincat and Brandon Saad have the same number of goals together as James Neal has all by himself (11).

Chicago is #30 on the league goals per game table with 2.27 per.  That’s not going to get it done and particularly with a defense that is middle of the pack at #15 allowing 3 goals per contest.  Chicago is #20 in shots for per game (30.5) which isn’t dreadful but not particularly good either. A bigger issue is that they’re #28 in shots allowed per game (34.5).  Corey Crawford has been struggling (1-4-0 3.67 .888) and Robin Lehner has essentially taken over as starting goalie getting the nod in four of the last five games.  He’s played reasonably well with a record of 2-2-2 and a 2.29 goals against average but he needs to get some help from his defense to limit his workload and the offense to put some points on the big scoreboard.  Throw out a 5-1 home win over the Los Angeles Kings on 10/27 and Chicago has scored 7 goals in support of Lehner in his other five starts.  Given the offensive talent on this team you have to think that the goals will come at some point but until then it’ll be a rough road for Chicago.

CALGARY FLAMES 5 OVER 8 UNDER 1 PUSH

Flames aren’t playing bad defensively and rank #14 on the goals against per game table.  The problem is on offense where they’re #25 scoring just 2.50 goals per game.  They’re #19 in shots per game (30.8) but something just isn’t right in Calgary.  The power play has been bad ranking #21 hitting on just 17.8 of man advantage chances.  One thing that has gone well for the Flames is the penalty kill where they’re #4 in the league (86.8%).  They’ve had a very pronounced home/road dynamic both in terms of wins and losses—4-1-1 at home and 2-5-1 on the road—but also in terms of scoring and totals.  In 8 games on the road they’ve gone ‘Under’ in six of them.  In six games at home they’ve gone OV in 3, UN in 2 and pushed 1.
