Michigan Governor Signs Off on Sports Betting Bill

It's official.  In-state sports betting is now legal in Michigan, both online and at retail outlets.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed Friday bills following months of reservation over the amount of tax that should be imposed.

With the governor's signature, Michigan became the second biggest state in the Midwest to legalize sports betting — behind Illinois — and the 20th state to do so in the nation, according to the American Gaming Association.

Asked about the potential timeline, Whitmer spokeswoman Tiffany Brown said "Gov. Whitmer is optimistic that implementation will be efficient."

Betting should be available in time for the heavily wagered on March Madness Men's College Basketball Tournament, which is likely to feature at least one of the state's big schools.

Requirements still need to be adapted.  This could result in some restrictions, though none have been brought up thus far (i.e. no wagering on games featuring state college teams).  The minimum age will be 21.
