To kick off the new year 2020, one of the least gambling-friendly states is looking like it may soon embrace expansion.
Casino gambling in Georgia seemed to get a boost Thursday during a public hearing at the Atlanta motor speedway.
There have been efforts to push for gambling expansion in the state over the past three years, however, the issue now may be lack of funding. Enter gambling to the rescue.
"Hopefully we’ll see some movement this year. There’s more talk about it this year with this session coming up than anytime in our history," said Ed Clark, who runs the Atlanta Motor Speedway.
With the talk of casinos coming to Georgia, it's only natural that the concept of sports betting as cropped up, especially with the Speedway behind such efforts.
Rep. Ron Stephens bill, HB 570, would allow for sports wagering on professional and college teams in the state of Georgia, with a tax rate of 10%.
The trend in the south is not to permit mobile wagering off-site (Mississippi, Arkansas, North Carolina) though there is a notable exception: Tennessee will only offer online/mobile sports betting as that state does not have any land-based casino venues.
Getting gambling bills passed in Georgia requires an amendment to the state constitution. Two-third votes of approval in the house will be needed followed by another two-thirds vote in the senate – then voters statewide decide. Eventhen, approval by voters in whatever communities would host a casino is still required.
Opponents have said gambling breeds addiction and damages families.
