While a safety is rare in Super Bowls, there were a string of them that occurred in modern times.  The payout is $53 for every $10 bet or $530 for every $100 bet.

Safeties have occurred in back to back Super Bowls two times and three straight once: Super Bowl IX and Super Bowl X; Super Bowl XX and Super Bowl XXI; and three straight in Super Bowl XLVI, Super Bowl XLVII and Super Bowl XLVIII.

Two-point safeties can change a game's dynamics, especially where the spread is concerned.  The most popular spreads/wins are 3 and 7 points, followed by the variations such as 6, 10 and 14.

Now imagine a game where the team is up a field goal.  The safety adds two points and turns the difference to 5.  This is indeed a rare spread.   The touchdown plus a two-point safety results in the more common 9-point victory.

Though rare, one-point safeties are also possible.  The one point safety is awarded to the offense after they have scored, the defense recovers a failed PAT or 2-point conversion, and the defensive player is then tackled in their own end zone.
