Sports Betting Expansion Likely to be Halted in 2020

Nearly every US state is dealing with some form of a "stay in place" order and the key focus among lawmakers right now is on dealing with the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on local economies.

The likelihood of states pursuing legalized sports betting expansion this year has dramatically decreased as a result.

One of those states, California, is under a full lockdown.

From SportsBookReview:

The state's tribes that have final say on whether legal sports betting will become a reality in California have yet to agree on any measures and don't look close to an agreement on just what a legal sports betting platform would look like. A deadline of next month was set for the tribes to gather enough signatures supporting legal sports betting in the state. And with California on lockdown, it is difficult to see just how those signatures can be collected.
Then there is the fact that California, which has taken the lead in invoking drastic coronavirus measures, has essentially shut itself down until at least mid-April. The legislature is closed for the first time in 158 years, meaning that discussions with all involved in the possibility of legal sports betting have been paused. Once the lockdown is lifted, it is unclear if there will be enough time or enough desire to get the subject on the 2020 ballot.

They add:

Maine, Connecticut, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, North Dakota, Arizona, Hawaii, South Dakota, Washington State, Georgia, Vermont, Alabama, Alaska, Wyoming and Nebraska have all had discussions and are in different stages in their attempt to bring in legal sports betting. To think, with all that is going on, that any of these states will go live in 2020 seems unrealistic at this time.
