It is pretty clear that for a team that falls into the bottom five of the league, that they need more talent. This 2020 class features a whole lot of it, and so a few lucky teams that land the top picks will have a chance to improve significantly in 2020-21.
1) Golden State Warriors
Despite having the worst record in the league this season, the Warriors faithful should be very optimistic going into next season. After five straight trips to the finals, they suffered through a complete roster overhaul, plus the injuries they took during the NBA Finals proved to signal an early end to their dominance and prominence. But it seemed it would be just a one year blip, considering that Klay was going to come back healthy along with Steph and Draymond. And if they get the first pick, great things could be on the way.
They should be looking to take a big man, with the likes of Deni Avidja, James Wiseman and Obi Toppin all likely available to them. A starting center would complete their team.
2) Cleveland Cavaliers
They won only 19 games out of 65, but flashes tremendous potential with JB Bickerstaff at the helm. Their young players like Collin Sexton and Kevin Porter Jr. have clearly started to take off. And they can go several ways in the draft. The best choice for them though, would be a small forward. Porter Jr. and Cedi Osman are not good enough to start at the small forward spot on a contending team. That is the one position that needs to be solidified. Or shooting guard.
LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards are likely the two guys that will be featured at the top of their draft board.
3) Minnesota Timberwolves
Their moves at this year’s trade deadline have helped set them up as a much better team. D’Angelo Russell and Malik Beasley have all but solidified the starting spots in the backcourt for next year. They should be looking for either a small or power forward in the draft. The backcourt + KAT are going to be surefire starters for the near future, so if they can find a great forward on the board when they make their selection, they will be set.
Josh Okogie should be fine as a sixth man for the years to come, but if they find a guy who can score and ALSO defend, they need to take it.
4) Atlanta Hawks
How many teams have ever been 20-47 and had a successful core already on the roster? He has yet to debut for them, but Clint Capela promises to be a terrific rebounder and rim protector for these guys. Trae Young is a superstar and just 21 years old. Kevin Huerter is looking like a potential stud on this club too. They have a few rising prospects in DeAndre Hunter and Cam Reddish here too. If they pay John Collins this summer, they’ll be competing for a playoff spot next year.
Ideally, their best bet is a shooting guard. Imagine how good Kevin Huerter could be as a sixth man here.
5) Detroit Pistons
They need to basically overhaul their entire roster. They had a horrendous year, in which Blake Griffin hardly played and Andre Drummond was traded. Christian Wood emerged as a star, but they lost Luke Kennard to injury in the first half of the year which he never recovered from. Ideally, they should be looking for a point guard, small forward or center. Wood, Kennard and Bruce Brown all have potential to have a solid future in Detroit. D Rose Is probably on his way to a contender next year, anyway.
They could really use a LaMelo Ball or Anthony Edwards type of guy here.
