The likelihood of mobile sports betting coming to California is not very good but land-based tribal casinos could offer in-person wagering at some point.

Assemblyman Adam Gray reportedly pitched the idea of legalizing sports betting as a way to help eliminate some of the proposed cuts in the state budget as California faces a $50 billion budget deficit.

The legislature and governor likely can’t just put legalizing sports betting in the budget package, writes Matthew Kredell.

From LegalSportsReport:

The issue appears to require a constitutional amendment that must first go in front of voters, although other states have found or have considered ways to circumvent what looked like constitutional roadblocks. Online poker in the state was considered for nearly a decade in the state in terms of just regular legislation not tied to an amendment.

Earlier this year, Gray introduced ACA 16 as a bill to put the question of legalizing sports betting on the November ballot.

Sen. Bill Dodds introduced a companion bill in the Senate, and the two chaired an informational hearing on sports betting in a Joint Governmental Organization Committee meeting in January.

Putting a constitutional amendment on the ballot takes a steep two-thirds vote in the legislature.

The legislative effort stalled as California Indian tribes broke off to pursue their own ballot initiative.

Thus far, no stakeholders are involved in the sports betting discussion.

The tribal initiative seemed on its way to acquiring the nearly 1 million valid signatures to put it on the ballot until the coronavirus stopped signature-gathering efforts.

It now seems unlikely that the tribal initiative will make the ballot. The required signatures can’t be changed and the governor has not extended deadlines on gathering signatures.

The deadline for signature verification is June 25. The initiative isn’t officially dead until the spokesman for the effort says it is or the deadline passes.

After more than a year of legislative hearings, a state bill that would legalize betting on sports in Ohio has taken its first step toward becoming law.

The Ohio House Finance Committee on Wednesday voted to recommend passage of House Bill 194. The bill would put the Ohio Lottery Commission in charge of regulating the system, and would tax betting receipts at 10%, sending net proceeds to education and gambling-addiction programs. Its next step is to head to the full House for approval.

Downtown Vegas Casinos Set to Reopen

The iconic Plaza Hotel & Casino located in the heart of downtown Las Vegas is among the Sin City casinos set to reopen Thursday, June 4 in accordance with all federal, state, and local government guidelines to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.  This means plenty of capacity controls, social distancing and extensive sanitizing.

“People are yearning to get back to living their lives, including relaxing by the pool and playing on the casino floor. While we recognize the experience will be different than before, it is the start of bringing back fun and entertainment to people’s lives – now, during these stressful times, when they need it most. So, we are very excited to welcome guests back to the Plaza and bring back the vintage Vegas vibe that our guests deserve and have come to expect.” said Plaza Hotel & Casino CEO Jonathan Jossel.
