It was reported that poker pro Chris “Big Huni” Hunichen placed - and won - a bet on the number of dead Americans from Covid-19.  He was on the OVER 100,000.  That sad milestone was hit last week.

The bet was placed with another individual, not an actual sportsbook.

Hunichen is not making light of the worldwide pandemic and he insists he's trying to raise awareness of the virus (as if we weren't already aware enough).

“Every day, I would see some kind of article where some 30-year-old or 35-year-old dies from this stuff," he said. "Honestly, I’m terrified. If I get it, I feel like that’s going to be me.”

Judge Denies Republican Request to Halt Sports Betting in Rhode Island

(AP) - A judge has denied a request by a Republican activist to halt sports betting in Rhode Island. 

Daniel Harrop, a former Providence mayoral candidate, in his complaint said that sports betting at the state’s two casinos and online violates the state Constitution because it was not approved by voters. 

He also said that through online wagering, the state allows sports betting to take place at any location in Rhode Island, not just the casinos. 

Judge Brian Stern agreed with Gov. Gina Raimondo’s administration, which argued that voters gave the go-ahead for sports betting when they approved table games at Twin River’s casino in Tiverton, The Providence Journal reported Monday. 

“The court finds that based on the plain language of the referenda questions and the definition of casino gaming ... voters had ‘fair notice’ that they were broadly approving all casino gaming and any other game included within the definition of Class III gaming,” Stern wrote. 

Joseph Larisa Jr., Harrop’s attorney, called the decision disappointing and said it will be appealed to the state Supreme Court. 

The ruling opens the door for an entire online casino without voter approval, he said. 

(No) Surprise!  California Sports Betting Hits Roadblock

Should sports betting one day be legalized in California, the tribes will be running it. Sports betting and retail will be limited to tribal casinos and racetracks.  A current piece of legislation provides for this.

But here is why the tribes and lawmakers still don’t see eye-to-eye. As per state legislation, tribal casinos have exclusivity over house-banked games. However, the new bills seek to amend this and allow player-banked games be part of the legislation. Player-banked games are taking place even today in private card rooms, and they don’t effectively break any laws, as the bank is no longer the “house,” but one of the players, and often on rotating basis.

Tribes have objected to the player-banking rule on multiple occasions, and they have sought to outlaw it. Now, with the proposed bills, lawmakers want player-banked games to be legitimized. In exchange, though, tribes would receive licenses to add craps and roulette games.

CNIGA’s Chairman, James Siva expressed his concerns following the updated bill. He commented that the bill’s language although it is after legalizing and regulating the market, it also: “provides California’s commercial card room industry with a massive expansion of games, by legalizing the use of proposition players to serve as the bank, a notion that has been rejected by California’s voters and fundamentally changes the legal structure of California’s peer-to-peer gaming industry.“
