The Tennessee Titans scratched and clawed their way to the sixth seed in the AFC with a 9-7 record. However, upsets against the Patriots and Ravens launches them into the AFC title game, finally falling to the eventual champions the Chiefs. Now in 2020, the Titans will look to build off of their success and return to the playoffs for the second year in a row.

Currently, odds-makers at A1pph.com have placed the over/under win total for Tennessee at 8.5. Before giving our pick for that bet, let’s take a closer look at how this offseason has gone for the Titans and who is coming up on their schedule this fall.

Offseason Summary

Tennessee has among the fewest new additions out of any team this offseason. Their biggest acquisition was Falcons LB Vic Beasley on a one-year deal. They also reached an agreement with Texans CB Johnathan Joseph. Others like Falcons OT Ty Sambrailo and DT Jack Crawford were added for depth purposes as well. But the Titans still spent money on retaining their current stars, most notably QB Ryan Tannehill. The NFL Comeback Player of the Year took over the starting job in Week 6 and played a big role for the Titans, earning a four-year extension. They also franchise tagged star RB Derrick Henry and re-signed OT Dennis Kelly and TE Anthony Firkser.

The Titans said goodbye to their former starting QB Marcus Mariota, who signed a one-year deal with the Raiders. But their biggest loss comes on the offensive line, as stud RT Jack Conklin left for the Browns on a sizable free agent deal. They also traded longtime DT Jurrell Casey to the Broncos. As far as other free agents, WR Tajae Sharpe signed with the Vikings, and LB Wesley Woodyard, CB Logan Ryan, and CB Tramaine Brock are all unlikely to return to Tennessee. The team also released a number of veterans, including RB Dion Lewis, TE Delanie Walker, LB Cameron Wake, and K Ryan Succop.

With a number of replacement players to draft and only six selections, the Titans made sure to hit their biggest needs early on. Tennessee took Georgia OT Isaiah Wilson, who should compete for the starting right tackle job to replace Conklin. LSU CB Kristian Fulton was the next pick for the Titans, as he likely enters the starting conversation with all the departed corners they’ve had this offseason. Appalachian State RB Darrynton Evans, NC State DT Larrell Murchison, Hawaii QB Cole McDonald, and Marshall DB Chris Jackson round out Tennessee’s draft class.

2020 Schedule

The Titans will face each of their AFC South opponents twice, as well as teams in the AFC North and NFC North. They’ll also go up against two other second-place teams, the Broncos and Bills, to round out their schedule. According to strength of schedule, Tennessee faces the 20th-most difficult schedule, with their opponents combining for a .498 winning percentage in 2019. Only Jacksonville’s opponents have a lower winning percentage in the division.

Tennessee will be tested right away with a road game in Denver to begin the season. Following a home game against the Jaguars, they travel to Minnesota to play the Vikings. Three straight games against the Steelers, Bills, and Texans should be a challenge, but all three of those games are at home. The second half of their schedule is the opposite, where their toughest games come on the road. Among the biggest matchups for the Titans includes an AFC divisional round rematch at the Ravens, a trip to Green Bay in late December to play the Packers, and road games against the rival Colts and Texans, the latter of which closes out the regular season.

Verdict

Ever since Tannehill took over at QB last season, the offense began to shine. Henry is a workhorse running back who should carry the load once again, and wide receivers Corey Davis and A.J. Brown are two solid options on the outside. While the Titans did lose some familiar names on defense, S Kevin Byard, CBs Adoree’ Jackson and Malcolm Butler, and LB Harold Landry make up some of the talent that is still in the organization.

With Houston losing a number of players, the uncertainty of Indianapolis with a new QB, and the upcoming rebuild in Jacksonville, Tennessee looks poised to win their first AFC South title since 2008. The schedule works well in their favor, the offense seems ready to build off of last year, and head coach Mike Vrabel has seemed to prove that he’s the right man for the job. I’m taking the Titans OVER 8.5 wins this season. When betting on the Titans, do so at our favorite pay per head bookie site A1PPH.com.
